Name Scope 1/26
Session Links

  • The "scope" of a name definition is the realm in which it's valid
  • Two scopes in Excel:
    • Global ("book level")
    • Local ("sheet level")
  • When you define a name, you choose its scope
    • Excel 2000-4 Local: prefix the name with <name of sheet>!
    • Excel 2000-4 Global: no prefix
    • Excel 2007: use the New Name dialog to set the scope
  • You can access any name from any sheet. Examples:
    • Sheet1!Expenses gets the local name defined in scope of Sheet1
    • BookName!Expenses gets the global name, even if within scope of a similar local name
    • Expenses gets the "closest" definition (local>global)

Demonstration

Scope is a term that denotes the realm of validity of a name. In Excel, there are two possible scopes for a name. Either it's accessible without a prefix throughout the workbook, or it's accessible without a prefix only on a specific sheet. The concept is described in detail in the readings on Names. The worksheet MarketingDept in the demonstration workbook illustrates this.

Many people find this concept challenging — I'm not exactly sure why. If you do master it, though, you'll set yourself apart from most users of spreadsheets.
