Software You Need for This Course

Microsoft Excel

For Windows, you need Excel, from Office 2000 or later, to do your homework, to do your course project, and to read the solutions to the homework. For the Mac, Excel 2001 or 2004. (Excel 2008 doesn't support macros)

Microsoft Word

You need Word, from Office 2000 or later, to write some of the documents that accompany your course project.

A Web browser

You need a Web browser to read this material, to read the homework assignments, and to read the narrative part of the homework solutions. Examples of browsers that suffice are Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or later, Netscape 7.2 or later, Internet Explorer 6 or later, or Apple's Safari. Other browsers might work, but we don't make any guarantees. And please verify that you've enabled Javascript.

Computer operating system

Windows 2000 or later, or MacOS 9.1 or later.

Virus protection

You also need protection from software viruses.

Most of the Microsoft Office files included in this course, such as PowerPoint slides, Excel solutions, and Excel demonstrations, are offered in two formats: Office 2000-2004, and Office 2007. In each case, the content of the two files is identical. We offer both formats as a convenience. Pick the file that matches your version of Microsoft Office.
